5 out of 5 stars Tom tom XLS rocks   October 19, 2008
This product has a very intuative interface. If you change your direction it will eventually pick it up and change the directions to your destination. We drove through 30 miles of fog and it led us to our remote mountain destination without a problem. I am very impressed with the unit. One thing I found is that when we had trouble finding a route I was able to pull up a map and drag the location where we wanted to go to, across the screen, and pinpoint our final destination. Of course you would need to know your final destination beforehand to make this work for you, but anyone with a computer can map it out and help the tomtom along. Also adjusting alternate routes was a breeze. It is a very good nav system and I certainly recommend it!

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as previous model   October 14, 2008

I only had my original TomTom for about a month before it was stolen, but I was generally happy with it. I replaced it with their newest model, but it does not seem as good as my first one. Why do I say that? The routing choices have been poorly selected. On a recent trip (145 miles) where I knew essentially where I was going, I just could not get the unit to focus on the best route which was an interstate highway as opposed to a crooked parallel state highway with only two lanes. After several alternatives were explored, it did OK for a portion of the trip but inexplicably flipped me back to a crooked state highway. This weekend, the unit selected similar set of completely inaccurate choices, both leaving and returning. I was leaving an address near Cincinnati, OH and the Appalachian Highway (SR 32) to Athens, OH, a trip of about 100 miles.TomTom ONE XL 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Maps of the U.S. and Canada The Appalachian highway is without a doubt the best and most direct highway and it four lane all the way, but the TomTom selected a number of crooked two lane roads that would have added substantial time to the trip. When I was less than 20 miles from my home, the unit selected another crooked two lane choice that would have added many miles to the trip and would have sent me in an easterly direction when I needed to stay on a northerly path.

To be fair, I made a trip to Columbus recently with a complicated path and the unit did a good job. I am left to wonder if the unit can do a decent job for an urban environment, but just cannot plot longer trips on priority highways.

I have found this to be a consistent problem. As such, I recommend another GPS unit other than a TomTom.

1 out of 5 stars TomTom XL S   October 9, 2008

We purchased TomTom XLS 08/02/08 for a trip to Canada. Many time the
GPS did not know where we were. Just yesterday I was going to see a family member in Indianapolis. She lived at the same address for about 3 years but street not in GPS. I called tech support and was told street on their new release but because I owned GPS more than 30 days I would have to pay for a new map $119.00. I feel like I was ripped off.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Buy   October 7, 2008
Have been most pleased with the TOM TOM ONE XL-s. Was a great time saver in finding my way through rural, south Virginia to a road race course in the middle of nowhere! Highly recommend this unit for most basic, auto, GPS needs. Plan to buy a friend one for Christmas!

3 out of 5 stars TomTom Really New?   September 8, 2008

The Tom Tom I bought as new was missing seval excessaries. Company said they would send them. I'm still waiting.
The Tom Tom made a noise when removed from packaging. Contacted Tom Tom Company, They requested I send it to them. Since one area of the Tom Tom was missing a cover over an area, They indicated that the unit might have been a refurbuished unit and not new.
