The uses of a radio in communicating with other vessels and coast guards, making distress calls, listening to weather forecasts and warning messages as well as notices of navigational hazards are manifold. A marine VHF radio can be fixed- mount or hand-held. For smaller boats, having one which is hand-held may be enough but for a bigger vessel, having one of good quality and fixed-mount and another hand-held one as a back-up may be a good idea.
Boat GPS – A Global Positioning system is an essential component of boat electronics. It gives accurate information about the exact position of the vessel in water. Boat GPS come in fixed-mount as well as hand-held models. Their prices also vary depending on the size, versatility in functioning and special features.

Depth sounders and Fishfinders – Even the simplest boat or yacht needs to have some device to know the depth of the water body. This gives protection from hitting the bottom accidentally or coming across some underwater obstruction. Bigger fishing vessels need to locate schools of fish. Both these functions are based on Sound Navigation and Ranging or SONAR. The depth sounders may only have a digital screen displaying the depth of water and are cheaper. Comparatively, the fishfinders are complicated machines showing contours of the sea bottom, temperature of the water and so on. They are thus more expensive.
Marine Radar – For vessels which are expected to navigate in water at night, marine radar is an expensive, but invaluable asset. It not only provides information about the velocity and distance of other vessels in relation to the mariner. Thus it is very useful in knowing the location of obstructions in poor light conditions.
Autopilots – Whether big or small, a boat autopilot relieves the strain of continuous human navigation by running on a set course for particular time duration.
