1 out of 5 stars Save your hard earned cash   August 27, 2008

We purchased this product with hopes that it would help us on our trip to Paris. The product was easily installed and intuitive. We familiarized ourselves with it before our trip and felt comfortable with its use and functionality. The problem with the Garmin Language Guide is the listing of words was extremely limited and the phrases are not ones we found any use for. I realized that my two years of very rusty high school French from 30 years ago and the ability of most everyone in Paris to speak at least a limited amount of English more than adequate for us to maneuver this large European city. Perhaps if we were in a more rural area where fewer people understood English this tool would have been more useful. After the first few attempts of trying to obtain some utility out of the Language Guide we never used it again.

1 out of 5 stars Not what you think it is!   July 28, 2008

Garmin language guide was a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! It comes with zero installation instructions. Inserted the chip into a Nuvi 660 and nothing happened. Technical support email link does not work. Tried calling and the recording said there was a 32 minute wait. Not wanting to use up cell phone minutes, I hung up. Then I returned the product for a refund. Will revert to my Franklin Spanish/English translator. Although not a particularly sophisticated device, it does work!

1 out of 5 stars One Way Translations are useless   May 22, 2008

Of what good is a translator when you can't understand the response; i.e the fact that the Nuvi translates your questions into a European language (in this case German) is of little use when the respondent answers in German. What's needed is a reverse translator that allows the native speaker to either select an appropriate response or type it in (assuming they have the patience to do so and do not misspell words). There are many interactive translators on the market but unfortunately, because of the memory required; they're all computer based. This is especially significant because languages like French and Especially German are often so grammatically different and because of that the English translations are often confusing.

3 out of 5 stars many Questions .... not too many answers   May 8, 2008

Purchased the Language translator 2 weeks ago, installed it and it worked perfectly... integrated fine ($67.00).

Purchased the POI for Europe (This product) last week. I expected the same level of integration and use, but found that a bit lacking.

I have tried to use it about 4 or 5 times but became frustrated as it does not seem to "integrate" with the existing Garmin POI in the unit.

To access the ($127.00) European POI, I think, but am not yet sure that you may have to go to a function or menu option for the POI, and search it manually based on the name of the business, restaurant or location.

If this is the case, it is NOT recommended. If the POI are not placed ON the map in the device, and all you have is an alphabetical listing that you search AFTER you find a POI that you want data on ... well then this is definately not worth what I paid for it.

I thought that the software (which loads automatically into the Garmin Nuvi when you insert the card and turn it on), would interface directly into the system. I thought that when you are displaying a European map, the additional POI, along with pertinant data on the POI woild automatically show up on the map in ADDITION to the existing POI that comes pre-installed with the map.

As there are NO instructions on the card, or in the system for using the European POI, I am at a loss as to how it works until I have the time to spend with it understanding how it interfaces.

This is not good, there is no intuitiveness built into this particular Garmin software, and it is confusing as to how it can cost so much, and yet seem to deliver so little.

3 out of 5 stars The full sized chip is just an adapter   March 1, 2008

I reviewed this item on 3/1 and gave it one star because I had gotten two copies of it and both were duds. I got the third one today and called garmin before trying to install it. Here's what I found out. The manufacterer in Taiwan recently changed the product, and the tech support people just realized it a day or two ago, having been bombarded with phone calls. There is a full sized chip and a microchip for different products. Previously, both had the data. Now, the full size chip is nothing but an adapter. You slide the microchip into a slot on the big one, and then put it into the SD slot. It loaded fine, and my wife is pleased. Avoid tearing your hair out.
