Amazon.com Product Description The Cobra MR HH425LI VP Marine Professional Series VHF/GMRS Radio keeps you in touch with what is going on around you, in virtually any environment. This rugged radio is a boatman's best friend, with plenty of range, features, and power to make sure that you stay aware of the weather you need to know about, and in touch with the people you need to talk to at the same time. The MR-HH425LI-VP Marine radio utilizes the VHF band for clear operation on any of the three channel maps established in US, Canadian and International channels, with an adjustable one-, three- or five-watt output for short- and long-range communication. This unit also provides instant access to all 10 NOAA weather channels for 24-hour coverage of hazard and weather information, and includes alerts with an audible tone and visual alarm to notify you if threatening weather is nearby, as well as S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Message Encoding) to filter out non-local warnings. As an added safety feature, the MR-HH425LI-VP provides instant access to channels 16 and 9 for emergency situations, and has a Tri-Watch function that monitors three channels at once, those being channel 16 and two user-selected channels. In addition to its regular VHF channels, the Cobra MR-HH425LI-VP lets you switch, at the touch of a single button, to its GMRS channels with ultra-clear UHF/FM reception, and 1815 combinations possible by combining the 15 channels with its 121 privacy codes. The GMRS also features a VOX function for voice-activated, hands-free radio transmission with five sensitivity levels, and advanced GMRS scanning that allows you to scan, in addition to regular channels, CTCSS privacy codes within a channel, DCS codes within a channel, or up to 10 memory locations in order to locate conversations. This Cobra radio features illuminated function keys, and an illuminated, large LCD display that allows high visibility at a glance even at night. This unit also features an external microphone/speaker jack for hip or body-worn operation, a signal meter that shows the strength of the receiving and transmitting signal, a selectable key-tone beep that can be turned off for silent use, and a button/key lock that locks functions to eliminate accidental settings changes. Additionally the MR-HH425LI-VP allows the programming of unlimited channels for easy retrieval or scanning, and lets you scan either all channels, or just channels programmed in memory to find conversations in progress. This unit also comes with Cobra's exclusive Rewind-Say-Again function that lets you play back the last 20 seconds of audio to re-check what you heard, battery saver circuitry that switches on after 10 seconds with no transmissions, 10 selectable call tones to differentiate between incoming callers, a roger beep, and a patented VibrAlert that is ideal for both silent and noisy environments. The MR-HH425LI-VP comes with a spring-loaded, swiveling belt clip that is removable and lets you secure your radio while on the go, as well as a wrist strap for easy carrying and use. This unit runs on a 1900mAh rechargeable, lithium-ion polymer battery that provides from 14 to 23.5 hours of stand-by time with no memory effect. What's more, this radio comes with a rapid-charge desktop charger that allows drop-in charging, with adapters for both home and vehicle use, and a battery tray that allows you to use six AA batteries to transmit in an emergency at full power. Good Radio, long battery life July 31, 2008 I bought two of these radios to use during a family relocation from Southern California to the Puget Sound area. We had two cars and were driving through the Redwoods and rural sections of Northern California. I knew that there would be times when there would be no Cell Phone coverage and there may be some extreme terrain conditions that ruled out using the low-powered "blister pack" radios.
Prior to the trip, I tried the radios in a normal urban environment. We were successfully able to communicate at ranges of 1 to 2 miles (with one radio inside a vehicle, and one inside a house). I also wanted to test the radios in "ideal conditions". I drove to the top of Signal Hill, a small city in the Long Beach area with an elevation of 150 feet and was able to communicate with the other radio in Anaheim, almost 15 miles away.
On the trip I had both radios set to the "Hi" power setting (5 watts) due to the terrain features that we had to overcome. I was concerned about the battery life at this setting, however the batteries had no problem powering the radios under fairly heavy use on each 8 hour leg of the trip (the radios were fully charged every night).
Overall the performance was great. They were well worth the money.
The only change I would like to see is a true scrambling feature for true privacy.
Cobra Replay Marine/GMRS radio - Love this radio April 19, 2008 This Cobra "Marine" radio is really used as an FRS/GMRS radio with a lot of power. It works very well and is easy to program and use. It has a VERY long lasting lithium battery (about 3 days on high power)and transmitts well from a vehicle on trips or through the mountains on a Ranger 4 wheeler UTV.
If the volume is turned up too high in noisy areas the speaker sometimes distorts but that is not a major issue...just turn down the volume a bit. Very dependable and I love the power it can transmit and receive in distance situations.
A great radio and a great buy!
Great Radio - No Complaints! February 13, 2008 This is a great radio. I bought it chiefly because it was JIS7 waterproof and it had the GMRS band in addition to the VHF. If it is as heavy duty as it feels (like a brick) it should last a long time. The buttons are easy to use, although I have changed the channel on accident once or twice.
Once I turned off the Rewind feature, I didn't have any problems with cutting off the beginning of transmissions.
Once fully charged, I used it all week, monitoring the weather channels several times a day, and even after that, the included battery pack lasted all day and overnight before it needed to be recharged when I left it on for 18 hours scanning the weather channels.
I highly recommend it.
Great Quality Radio November 13, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this radio a few days ago and I'm extremely happy with it. Coming from Icom radios I was expecting this to be a low quality item but I was plesantly surprised. The radio is very well made and seems like if it will last many years through rough abuse. I'm planning on using it mainly as a way to communicate with other hunters and since it has both VHF and GMRS frequencies, it's a great buy. One of the guys I hunt with has the same radio and lives about 4 miles away here in South Florida and even though we have plenty of building between our houses, we were able to hear each other clearly using both the VHF and GMRS so it should work great in both land and sea. So if you're thinking of buying it, don't think anymore because Cobra really did a good job putting this radio together.
Great VHF/GMRS radio November 2, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I just received two of these radios earlier this week, primarily to use as GMRS radios.
Having used them now for a few days, I'm so far impressed with the quality and reception. My biggest gripe is that the PPT button is sometimes hard to locate just right, since it is covered by the same flexible plastic which covers the light/lock button. I think these two buttons should be separated.
Regarding the squelch delay mentioned by another reviewer, the delay occurs only when CTCSS or DCS is enabled, AND the rewind function is enabled (it is by default). Even then, I timed it closer to 1/2 second. In any case, here's how to get rid of that delay: For close to ZERO squelch delay, disable CTCSS/DCS, and disable REWIND. The REWIND is by far what causes the longer delay, it seems to me. Turn it off, and by far most of the delay is gone, in fact I would say it is close to instant squelch unlock. Only problem I have is, I would LIKE to use both the CTCSS/DCS and REWIND features. Doing so will increase the squelch delay to 1/2 second or so (which is not uncommon with many radios), so you will have to decide what works for you.
This radio is VHF/GMRS only, not FRS. FRS frequencies 8-14 are FRS only, and are not shared with GMRS. This radio is not marketed as an FRS radio, therefore FRS frequencies 8-14 are not included. Frequencies 1-7, and 15-22 are GMRS (with 1-7 only being shared with FRS).
Overall I'm real happy this these radios.
