Product Description Traffic jams can't always be prevented. But with Garmin's GTM 20 portable traffic receiver, you can often avoid them. The GTM 20 is an integrated FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) traffic receiver, antenna and cigarette lighter adapter. Designed exclusively for the American version of compatible Garmin products, it receives digital information (where available) on traffic and road construction tie-ups that your compatible Garmin unit uses to offer an alternate route. TMC data, available in a fast-growing number of cities throughout North America, gives prompt, accurate notification of accidents, road construction, police, or emergency action, etc. - so you can visually monitor traffic flow and, if necessary, avoid traffic tie-ups.The GTM 20 is a simple plug-and-play solution that combines a self-contained antenna, traffic link and 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter to provide real-time traffic alerts. No professional installation required. Just plug the GTM 20 into your compatible Garmin device, and you're ready to receive data.In most areas, depending on the service provider, TMC traffic broadcasts are continuous - there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. With the GTM 20, you see traffic developments in real-time, as they happen, so you can make the right decision sooner. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions. adapter.

nice accessory October 25, 2008 the first time i plugged it into my garmin 450 it instantly started a software update. thats what i call plug and play. haven't been able to use it yet in an area thats covered but i have lots of confidence due to the recognition of the plug by the unit.
Works as Advertised October 7, 2008 Works great as advertised right out of the box. Initial set up was easy. Bought it for my wife, who is a technophobe, but she had no difficulty learning to use it.
User beware September 20, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Use of this device requires the tightening of the fuse cap every few times that you remove it from the cigarette lighter. If you forget to do this, the cap will eventually unscrew and the pressure from the internal fuse spring will cause 1/2 dozen metal and plastic parts to explode all over your car's interior.
And just when you nicely get into the habit of performing the above, the plastic screw cap will break in two, making the device useless.
Buyer Beware!!! Cheap "Breakable" Plastic Screw Cap August 27, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The GTM 20 if you will look at the pick has a cheap black plastic round cap that holds in a fuse at the tip away fron the power cord. This piece of junk will easily break because the screw treads are cutting too deeply into the shank. Mine broke simply by pulling it out of the power source and believe me I am very careful with expensive items like this. It should have been made of metal! This thing costs an average of 200 bucks plus! Where is the quality???!!! I hope the government makes this sorry company recall or at least send out a non-breakable screw cap! What a rip off!!!
Used one for over a year, Love it! August 2, 2008 I have used this product in the seattle area for over a year. It works, it has taken me on routes I didn't even know existed (after living here for 25 years) , and routes I knew but never thought to use them in the way the traffic router does. It is invaluable to me. It does pick the best route based on the traffic information without having to touch the yellow diamond, that is only when something comes up in route you can choose to avoid or not. It will ask me verbally that there is a better route available do I want to choose it? I am shocked at the replacement price for the GTM 20, mine is fraying at the plug to the unit not the lighter end. Amazon price is better than Garmin's but I just don't think I can live without it. I will have to save my beans to replace it. It gives me peace of mind commuting to work everyday!.
