Amazon.com Product Description
With the Uniden 22-Channel 14-Mile 2-Way Radio you can stay connected with your buddies while on the trail, at the baseball game, or anywhere else within a 10-mile range. This lightweight, palm-sized radio is also ideal as a neighborhood watch tool and kid-sitting aid. Each state-of-the-art radio features 22 channels (15 GMRS, 7 FRS) and 99 privacy codes per channel to help reduce interference. Another great attribute of this Uniden two-way radio is its hands-free operation, which is made possible by a user selectable Voice Operated Transmitter (VOX) that can be used for automatic voice transmission. Transmission begins when you speak into the optional remote headset for snappy, hands-free communication that is both safe and efficient. The large number of channels and privacy codes give you several communication options that ensure you can almost always talk with your friends and family via an exclusive, uninterrupted signal. Plus, channels are easy to find, thanks to the channel scan feature, which browses to active channels while you watch the display. And the channel monitor function listens for weak signals on a given channel with the press of a key.

These two-way radios offer additional privacy and safety features. If you're having a conversation with sensitive matter, these radios offer a voice scramble feature that prevents outside monitoring. And for added safety, the radios receive emergency and weather broadcasts from the NOAA National Weather Service. When in Emergency/Weather mode, the radios monitor the selected emergency/weather channel for alerts, even when you're not actively communicating.

Additional features include a backlit LCD display that is easy to read under any lighting conditions, a keypad lock that prevents your settings from being accidentally changed, and a choice of five different call tones that offer distinctive ring options to easily identify who's calling. The radios are also equipped with a battery strength meter that monitors the status of the batteries so you can always stay in touch, a key beep audio confirmation of each button you press, and a "roger beep" tone to confirm to other users that you're done speaking. The built-in headset jack is for the optional headset mic, which enables hands-free operation. The radios are equipped with dual-location charging units that make it easy to keep your radios charged and ready to go, and they can also be powered by four AAA alkaline batteries (not included). This two-pack unit comes with the manufacturer's one-year limited warranty.

What's in the Box
Two GMR1448-2CK two-way radios and two charging units.

3 out of 5 stars Good radios for the price   October 1, 2008
I purchased these radios to use on a cruise and they worked well all over the ship.
I can't say much about the range since the ship is only about a 1,000 feet. But the signal went thru alot of walls throughout the ship.
The battery life could have been better, but they seemed to last about a day so we just recharged them each night.
One thing to note, they mention weather updates on this radio and that is false. There is no weather service option on this radio. Some of the ones just a bit more expensive do have that option.
The volume control with 2 buttons isn't as nice as the turn dial control on some of the nicer models.
But for the price, this is a good radio.
One final note. A previous comment mentioned that he wouldn't use this until he could pay for the license. There are many channels which are free (lower power) so you don't have to pay for the license. And additionally, in my case, we were out in international waters, so no laws applied.

5 out of 5 stars Great radios!   September 15, 2008
I bought 4 sets of these to use for a school fundraiser. We were spread out over probably 20-30 acres and used the radios between 6-12 hours a day. Most days most of the radios still held a charge...the cool thing was that when the rechargeable batteries went dead, we just popped in four AAA's. Though Uniden told me in no uncertain terms that these radios weren't designed for this type of use, they performed quite well considering the price. It did seem like the batteries lasted better as time went on, so I think maybe they should be charged longer than the recommended 16 hours the first time they are used. I'm buying another set!

5 out of 5 stars Kids love them, easy to use, good price at the time.   April 10, 2008
Kids love them, easy to use, good price at the time. Nice set, rechargeable batteries and charger a big plus. Haven't tried them over any great distance, but they work fine in a pretty well treed area.

2 out of 5 stars shipping was a Joke   March 18, 2008

The package was shipped DHL but was delivered to the US Postal Service for them to deliver to the work/business address. I lost the ability to track the package when it was delivered to the USPS. I have no faith in the USPS and if I would have known that is how they were going to ship it I would have paid more to have it not shipped threw them.

The maximum FRs range on flat land is only 1 1/4 miles not 5 miles as advertised. I am very disappointed and insulted.
