2 out of 5 stars NOT APCO-25 capable!!!!!!!   October 28, 2008
3 out of 6 found this review helpful

I agree with all positive reviews here -- great unit for the price.

However make sure you're area doesn't use APCO-25 (P-25), this item will be worthless to you. This scanner decodes all sorts of trunking systems, but not the ONE I needed. Go figure.

I gave it 2 stars since the description said nothing about this, it is effectively less-than-half useful to me -- but if I DIDN'T need APCO-25, this would be my first choice handheld scanner, great quality scanner.

***Amazon : PLEASE put in description "Not APCO-25 compliant"!

5 out of 5 stars BC-246T Works great   October 25, 2008
The BC-246 works great. It took me a little while to figure out how to set up the local trunking system, but after a few hours I had all the local Freqs installed. I like being able to lockout certain Id's, before I had to listen to everyone on that Frequency. Well worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars Take your time...   August 25, 2008

For me, I wanted to be able to program some of my local frequencies and listen. It takes a bit more than this. If you have a chance, review the owners manual to different scanners before you buy. There are a number of .pdf files out there that will allow you to do this. I have never owned a scanner before and that knowledge may have led me to a a different model. Since I'm new to this arena, understanding the different concepts that go along with technology, can take some time. But in the long run is worth.
Having said that, programming this is not logical unless you understand the princeples and, should be easier for someone who is newer to this field.
It does come with multiple channels pre-programmed with popular channels from all over the U.S. This is annoying since most of them are useless. They take up more space then they are worth and since different systems share the same freqs, you'll have to edit the name anyway. WHy not just do it from scratch. Do the research to make sure this is the right scnner for you needs.

3 out of 5 stars good scanner for those with unlimited time (and money)   August 23, 2008

This is my first scanner purchase, i have borrowed some old fashioned ones before.

First of all do not fall into the trap of expecting better reception just cause its a newer scanner and an expensive one at that.

This scanner will come with nearly all major cities preprogrammed(except minneapolis for some dumb reason) and guess what? They are all set to scan automically. In order to disable them you will have to select every single one and lock them out individually which takes along time. Why in the hell would you want to scan every city in the first place??? Whatever.

Anyways I do like the dynamic memory that it has, its very useful for organizing your freqs. I also like how small the scanner is, i thought it would be bigger.

Now for the real problem, using software for your scanner which im sure would help with the above mentioned problems. They give you a serial port connection...WHY??? I have been building computers for 10 years and have never EVER had to use a serial connection, so why they would use this outdated crap in 2008 is beyond belief. I only have 1 computer that even has a serial connection still and guess what it has Linux on it, so therefore I am screwed in that department.

The scanner works that is all I can say, If you are new to them do not buy a handheld one, just get the old fashioned base scanners.

As a side note i think uniden intentionally made the scanner difficult to program just so you would buy the software for an extra 40 dollars and also a usb cable if you didnt have a serial connection.
